A review article discusses desirable characteristics of a computerized system to record and statistically analyze data developed in food sensory research. These attributes include low cost, compactness, versatility, and simultaneous data collection from a number of sensory panelists for file storage and retrieval for statistical treatment. A particular computerized sensory system is illustrated, and its pratical utility is discussed. A survey of 25 panelists found that 19 preferred the computerized system. The system has the added advantage of real-time data collection and organization, and is adaptable for use with most computers to perform a variety of sensory functions. (wz)
