A case-control study considered risk factors for mild ophthalmological manifestations of vitamin A deficiency in urban Bangladesh children under 14 years old. After controlling for 3 demographic characteristics that were independently associated with vitamin A deficiency (male sex, increased age, families having a greater number of children), 4 factors remained associated with this deficiency, viz.: low intakes of local vitamin A-rich foods; cessation of breast-feeding; a recent history of protracted diarrhea; and a maternal ignorance of vitamin A deficiency prevention and management. The implications of these results for vitamin A deficiency prevention and therapy are discussed.(wz)
