A study has been made of the efficiency of a number of new synthetic polyalkyiene oxide froth suppressants in microbial riboflavin synthesis. A new hybrid Bacillus subtilis strain with high vitamin-synthesizing capacity, obtained by genetic engineering methods and introduced commercially, was used as the riboflavin producer. A block copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxides having a mean molecular mass of 10,000 D was shown to have the highest froth suppression activity of any compound tested. The results of laboratory studies were confirmed under industrial conditions.
