Factors affecting protein requirements
1978
Harper, A.E.
Certain conditions increase protein requirements of healthy people. Healthy adults need no more than 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Children require three times this amount. Protein requirements in adults increase with deposition of new tissue as in pregnancy or when there is loss of tissue protein. The elderly, physically disabled, people on weight loss diets or strict vegetarian diets have specific protein needs. The relationship between energy needs and tissue proteins is explained.
