The effect of foliar fertilization with urea in combination with root fertilization on the content of total soluble proteins, free amino acids, chlorophyll and the enzyme Rubisco (EC 4.1.1.39) in spinach was evaluated. We tested nine treatments, which resulted from the combination of root fertilization with 0, 50, and 100% of Steiner's nutrient solution and urea foliar fertilization at 0, 1, and 2%. Foliar fertilization of urea at 2% increased soluble protein content in leaves more than 50%, in comparison with control plants. Foliar fertilization at 1 and 2% increased chlorophyll a concentration in those treatments using no or low nutrient supply via roots. Treatments did not affect chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratio. Free amino acid content in leaves was at least 40% higher in plants receiving 2% urea as foliar fertilizer, in comparison with control plants, while, in roots, a positive effect of foliar fertilization on the same parameter was observed, when no fertilizer was applied to substrate. Urea foliar fertilization increased Rubisco content in leaves when both kinds of fertilization were combined. Contents of total soluble protein, chlorophyll a, free amino acid and Rubisco enzyme indicate an important increase of nitrogen content in leaves as a result of foliar fertilization with urea.
