Reuse of Abandoned Buildings and the Rural Landscape: The Situation in Spain
2007
García, A.I. | Ayuga, F.
Since the 1950s, there has been a Europe-wide fall in the number of farmers and in the rural population in general. Agricultural and rural activities now represent a smaller percentage of the gross domestic product than in years past. One of the immediate consequences of this decline has been the large number of redundant buildings in the countryside surrounding rural towns. Little money is made available for the conservation of these buildings, and their progressive deterioration eventually leads to their complete ruin. Their reuse, however, could play a part in landscape protection and restoration, and reduce the total number of new buildings required in rural areas. Their restoration could also be an opportunity to improve their integration into the landscape. A method for the study of building reuse, and some of the common mistakes made in this type of work, is discussed in this article.
