Diet and the diabetic patient
1983
Nuttall, Frank Q.
A comprehensive literature review presents dietary factors in diabetes management, identifies information gaps, and suggests a flexible approach to diet planning that may result in an improved patient acceptance of dietary considerations for diabetes control. Because it is not known whether dietary changes can significantly delay or prevent the long-term complications of diabetes, the insistence that certain foods be avoided or that a specified diet be rigidly followed cannot be scientifically defended. Diets selected by diabetics, however, should contain adequate nutrients. Further, diabetics receiving insulin or hypoglycemic drugs must follow a diet that is consistent in carbohydrate content and time of meal ingestion. Such therapy, however, usually can be designed to allow for the diabetic's normal eating habits and food preferences; a flexible approach to dietary management leads to better compliance by diabetics.
