Please pass that woman some more calcium and iron

Although women's and men's requirements for most minerals and vitamins are similar, there are situations in which women's needs for certain nutrients exceeds men's. For example, women need more iron during the childbearing period. A woman can get the 18 mg of Fe to meet her daily need by a wise choice of foods, including those rich in vitamin C to enhance the absorption of the mineral. Calcium is also crucial to a woman's nutrition; without a sufficient amount, the bones decrease in mass and are susceptible to fracture, a condition called osteoporosis. Although osteoporosis occurs in both sexes, it is far more common in women than men, in whites than in blacks. Supplements of estrogen and calcium following menopause help retard this condition. National Institutes of Health experts recommend that women increase calcium consumption to 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day. Women taking oral contraceptives need up to 5 mg of B6 a day (the RDA for B6 for women is 2 mg). There is also a recommendation for an increase in folate up to 1 mg a day. Pregnant women should be cautious about megadose therapy. Tabular data on the calcium + iron content of common foods are included. (emc)
