Nutrition and cataract
1979
Bunce, George E.
Excessive caloric intake is the most important dietary factor in the development of maturity-onset diabetes. There is evidence that lens sorbitol concentrates are elevated and senile cataracts are more frequent in maturity-onset diabetes than in age-matched controls. Therefore, dietary measures for the prevention or reduction of adiposity may be a positive factor in prolonging lens transparency. There is not conclusive evidence to show that riboflavin deficiency, calcium deficiency, zinc deficiency, or lactose, galactose, arabinose, or xylose excesses have a direct effect on lens opacities and the formation of cataracts.
