Dietary fiber and the risk of cancer
1987
Eastwood, M.
High fiber diets are discussed as a possible mechanism to prevent or modulate the sequence of events leading to colon cancer. This includes changes in bacterial type and enzyme capability, dilution of possible carcinogens such as bile acids, and colonic mucosal exposure to volatile fatty acids, especially butyrate. Tentative dietary recommendations are to ingest 30 grams of fiber daily with half-derived from bran and the remainder from fermentable sources. (RAH)
