Mating success of differently sized onion flies, delia antiqua
1981
ROBINSON, A.S. | ZURLINI, G.
By shortening the larval feeding period, differently sized pupae of the onion fly, Delia (= Hylemya) antiqua Meigen were produced. They were divided into five size classes and the emerged adults were mated in many combinations and various parameters were assessed. Size did not affect mating success, egg hatchability or male survival. However, larger females produced a greater number of eggs and the oviposition rate was positively correlated with female size. Male size had no effect on any of these parameters. The results are discussed in the framework of quality of laboratory strains and it is suggested that pupal size alone is not sufficient to enable predictions to be made concerning competitiveness.
