Studies in Accelerated Oxidation of Cellulose

Shenai, V.A. | Shah, K.D.
The catalytic activity of nickel hydroxide, when present on cotton cellulose, while carrying out sodium hypochlorite , oxidation of cellutose, has been studied with respect to variations of the nickel content of cellulose, the pH of the oxidizing medium, and the concentration of the oxidant. The oxycelluloses thus produced have been further modified by subjecting them separately to aqueous solutions of chlorous acid and sodium borohydride to characterize the reducing and acidic groups formed in the oxycellulose samples. Nickel hydroxide has been shown to possess intense catalytic activity, compared to other accelerants like manganese and ferrous hydroxides.
