High fiber diets increasingly recommended
1984
High fiber, high complex carbohydrate diets are being used more often to prevent a number of conditions. These include normalizing blood sugar levels, reducing serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, promoting increased dietary-induced thermogenesis and increasing satiety in weight loss. Much more is now understood about how fiber acts in the body. Pectins help lower serum cholesterol levels. Cellulose normalizes bowel function, and some fibers slow down gastric emptying. About 30-35 grams of ditary fiber per 1,000 calories are required. A chart depicts the dietary fiber content of common foods, and sources of additional information are given. (kbc)
