Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common ailment. Its average prevalence was estimated to 10%. It is a chronic relapsing disease that often eludes conventional treatments for its complex and multifactorial pathophysiology. In our practice, we have found a use of medicinal plants and traditional recipes, and patients also often report a beneficial effect of them. Therefore, we conducted a prospective study for 6 months on the epidemiological profile of 100 patients with IBS responding the Rome III criteria and using medicinal plants as a treatment option, the effects of these plants and their possible toxicity. The improvement was judged according to predetermined visual scales and a quality of life questionnaire (SF36 and PHQ-15) at J0, S2 and S4. The cases collected represented 68% of all (SII), followed by consultation. The average age of patients consisting 73 women and 27 men was 38.4 years. A combination of several medicinal plants was observed in 76 cases (80.8%) while the use of a single plant was observed only in 18 cases (19.1%). The plants used were anise in 42 cases (50%), thyme in 32 cases (42.1%), cumin in 22 cases (26.5%), ginger in 12 cases (15.6%), verbena in 16 cases (18.7%), caraway in 22 cases (26.5%), celery and sage in only 1 case (0.7%). The mode of administration varied depending on the plant as infusion or powder. Relief of symptoms was noted in all patients, but recurrence was important. There were no cases of toxicity, however, we found contraindications to these plants peretting thus to advise the patients concerned.
