Nutritional evaluation of low-mucilage canola meal for swine
1989

A factorial experiment was conducted with 72 barrow pigs initially 23 kg and terminating at 57 kg. Two canola meals (CM) differing in natural mucilage content were fed at 0, 6 and 12% dietary levels, with and without a dietary enzyme supplement containing beta-glucanase and pentosanase. Growth rate and feed intake were not affected by mucilage level in CM. Enzyme supplementation resulted in a small (P<0.05) increase in daily gain (0.70 vs 0.67 kg) which was related in part at least to increased daily feed intake. A digestibility trial conducted with similar pigs, of 35-45 kg initial weight, showed the low-mucilage CM to be superior in digestibility of energy (71.7 vs 65.1%) and protein (81.4 vs 74.9%) compared to the control CM but this could not be attributed to the difference in mucilage content alone because of other basic differences in seed quality. Enzyme supplementation resulted in a small (P<0.05) increase in energy digestibility with the control CM (76.8 vs 75.8%).
