Food restriction and the aging process
1984
Masoro, Edward J.
Longevity, age-related physiological deterioration, and age-related disease (specifically, chronic nephropathy) under food-restriction regimens were reviewed and examined with experimental rodents. Four hypotheses are put forth concerning the mechanism by which food restriction slows aging (maturation delay; growth rate reduction and growth prolongation; body fat reduction; and reduction of metabolic rate per unit of body mass). The relevance of food restriction in rodents to human aging is discussed. (wz)
