Influence of graded dietary levels of meals from three lupin species on the excreta dry matter, intestinal viscosity, excretion of total and free sialic acids, and intestinal morphology of broiler chickens

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of different dietary levels of seeds of three lupin species – Lupinus angustifolius (narrow-leaved), Lupinus luteus (yellow) and Lupinus albus (white) – on the excreta dry matter, excretion of total and free sialic acids, and ileal morphology of broiler chickens. A corn-soybean meal control diet and diets containing 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 g/kg of three lupin species were fed to 10 replicate cages of 8 broiler chickens per treatment throughout the 35-day study.The effect of lupin species was confirmed for all determined parameters. The DM of excreta quadratically increased as dietary level of yellow lupin was increased. The viscosity of ileal digesta linearly and quadratically increased as the narrow-leaved lupin inclusion was increased. The increasing of the narrow-leafed lupin level diet quadratically increased endogenous secretion loss through a higher production of sialic acid. The use of increasing levels of white lupin linearly and quadratically decreased sialic acid excretion. All diets containing lupin seeds decreased crypt depth, and diets with narrow-leaved and yellow lupins increased ileum villus height. To conclude, increasing levels of yellow and white lupins in broiler diets did not increase endogenous secretion loss and only to a small extent increased digestal viscosity. The narrow-leaved counterpart did not provide a satisfactory outcome.
