A simple, precise, rapid and quantitative thin-layer chromatography method is described for the separation and estimation of carotenoid pigments which is particularly useful for the determination of pro-vitamin A content in breeding programs of fruits and vegetables. The method is applied to the analysis of tomatoes, carrots, and the green vegetable, Amaranthus gangetica.(wz)
