Because of the importance of eucalyptus species in forestry, diverse studies have been conducted on microorganisms that have symbiotic associations in the roots. In spite of interest and importance of this research, it has received limited attention in Mexico. This study assessed the influence of soils from three different sites, with different organic matter contents and four combinations of mineral fertilization, on growth, production of short roots, and association with external mycelium of fungi symbionts of Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Plants grown in soil with the highest organic matter content, without mineral fertilization, had higher total biomass, foliar P content, and density of feeding-roots associated with external mycelium of symbiotic fungi, than those plants grown in soil with lower organic matter content. In general, this pattern was similar when soils were fertilized only with N or P. Most of the treatments registered low colonization rates of ectomycorrhizal (5 to 10%) or arbuscular mycorrhizal (10 to 20%) fungi. In contrast, there was an abundance of endophytic fungi different from the mycorrhizal fungi, and in some treatments, a high density of feeding-roots colonized by external mycelium of endophytic fungi. Finally, according to the results, the ecophysiological implications of the symbiotic fungi component on eucalyptus development are discussed.
