Hypertriglyceridemia during the intravenous infusion of a safflower oil-based fat emulsion
1983
Cooke, Richard J. | Burckhart, Gilbert J.
A prospective, blind study with a group of low birth weight (LBW) infants assessed whether lipid intolerance as indicated by hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) might be more common in LBW infants receiving a safflower oil-based emulsion relative to those receiving a soybean oil-based emulsion via parenteral feeding. Examination of plasma triglyceride levels indicated that HTG appears to be more common in LBW infants receiving a safflower oil-based emulsion. However, in view of the potential side-effects of hyperlipidemia and the current insensitive methodology (serum turbidity measurements) used to diagnose hyperlipidemia in most newborn intensive care units, caution should be used in employing intravenous safflower oil-based emulsions with LBW infants.
