Fuel metabolism of the mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus) embryo
1993
Handel, E. van
Adult female Culex quinquefasciatus were fed blood and maintained either on sugar or on water for 5 days. They were then allowed to oviposit. Egg rafts, placed in a few drops of water, were analyzed immediately after oviposition and after hatching, 40-44 h later. In both groups, lipid diminished during embryogenesis from 92 to 50 micrograms. Glycogen diminished from 20 to 8 micrograms and from 13 to 6 micrograms in rafts of mosquitoes maintained on sugar and water, respectively. The protein content remained unchanged. Calorically, approx. 90% of embryonic respiration was supported by lipid, and 10% by glycogen consumption.
