Aspartame: review of the safety issues
1987
Stegink, L.D.
A brief review summarizes data obtained from the administration of aspartame to normal adults and children, including individuals heterozygous for phenylketonuria. Specific attention is given to the effect of aspartame loading on blood methanol and formate levels, on plasma aspartate levels, and on plasma phenylalanine levels. Results of animal feeding experiments also are included. It is emphasized that the methanol content of aspartame is considerably lower than that of fruit juice, and that a fasting 4-year-old child could ingest 3 successive 12-ounce servings of aspartame-sweetened beverage without encountering an appreciable increase in plasma phenylalanine.(wz)
