Effects of long-chain vs medium-chain triglycerides on gastric emptying time in premature infants

Gastric emptying time of 2 infant formulas (81 kcal/dL each) differing only in the medium-chain-triglycerides (MCT) proportion of total lipids was measured in 16 appropriate-for-age, premature infants (5 girls, 11 boys). The mean gavage feeding time (6 minutes) was similar for both formulas. No significant differences in gastric emptying time were noted for between or within groups, indicating that no difference occurs in gastric emptying time in premature infants fed a formula having an 18/82 lactalbumin/casein ratio differing only in the proportion of MCT.
