Modified S1 Recurrent Selection in Maize Improvement
1989
Dhillon, B. S. | Khehra, A. S.
In intrapopulation improvement, S₁ recurrents election is widely used. The objective of this study was to propose a method of a modified S₁ recurrent selection for use in maize (Zea mays L.), and to use the expected genetic gain from the modified method for comparison with other methods of intrapopulation improvement. Three growing seasons are usually required for completing one cycle of S₁ recurrent selection. In the proposed method, the evaluation and recombination phases were combined. The selection was assumed to have been practiced among and within S₁ families. This modification enables the completion of one cycle of selection in two growing seasons only. This reduces, from two to one, the number of years required per cycle, provided off-season nurseries can be used. Under certain situations, one cycle of modified S₁ selection alternated with one cycle of half-sib selection can be completed in a year. The genetic gains per year from the proposed methods were expected to be greater than those from other methods of intrapopulation improvement.
