Assessment of the nutrition education needs of preschooler's mothers in the Regina Rural Region
1987
Misskey, E.
This study assesses the nutrition education needs of 54 mothers and their 3-year-olds in relation to Canada's Food Guide. A 90 minute in-home interview was conducted with each mother to collect data on the children's food intake, mothers' perceived needs for information, and mothers' nutrition knowledge. Results support the need to emphasize: milk and milk products as an important source of calcium in the diet of children; fruits and vegetable in children's daily diet; that vitamin and mineral supplements should complement not duplicate nutrients already in the diet. Snacking was found to be an important pattern among preschool children. It was also indicated that mothers need positive ways to cope with feeding concerns and need readily available, reliable sources of written information. Findings suggest the need for nutrition-related parent education and specific information useful in planning program content and delivery.
