A smoking cessation program for pregnant women: An exploratory study

An exploratory study of a program combining risk information and strategies for cessation of smoking drawn from behavioral approaches to smoking control is described. The absolute level of abstinence achieved ranks above other results reported in the literature. Several key factors, however, must be considered: (1) the small sample size (eleven); (2) omission of a no-contact control condition that would measure spontaneous quitting; (3) omission of an attention-placebo control condition; and, (4) the fact that participants were volunteers relatively advanced in pregnancy.
