The importance of platelet function tests in toxicological screening using laboratory animals
1972
Hawkins, Rosemary I.
The haemostatic mechanism depends partly upon platelet activity. An increase or decrease in this activity will result in clotting or bleeding abnormalities respectively. Changes of platelet function suggest that an haemorrhagic or thrombo-embolic condition may result from the altered haemostasis induced, for example, by drug or dietary action. It is important therefore that assessment of platelet function is included in normal toxicity screening. In order for this to be carried out it has been established that these tests are applicable to the laboratory animals used for this procedure, and examples given of the typical results obtained.
