The effects of seed treatment with 0.2 or 1 mg agmatine sulphate, 0.067 or 0.27 mg BAS-106 (5-(4-chlorophenyl)-3,4,5,9,10-pentaazatetracyclo[5,4,1,02,6,08,11]dodeca-3,9-diene), 0.05 or 0.2 mg BA and 0.2 or 1 mg GA3/seed on soyabean cv. Century seedling emergence, early seedling growth and leaf structure were studied. Agmatine sulphate did not affect emergence, growth or structure, while BAS-106 delayed emergence, decreased internode growth and decreased the size and number of leaf cells. BA delayed emergence, retarded leaf, stem and root growth, decreased leaf cell size and increased leaf cell number, while GA3 had no effect on emergence, increased internode elongation and reduced the size and number of leaf cells. Chlorophyll loss from isolated leaf discs was reduced by suspension in aqueous solutions of 1 or 10 mM agmatine sulphate, 1 or 5 mM BAS-106 or 1 or 10 mM BA, but was increased with 1 or 10 mM GA3.
