An outbreak of fascioliosis in spotted deer (Axis axis)

Eleven carcases of spotted deer (Axis axis) referred for necropsy to Pathology Department of Veterinary College was found to be severely infested with Fasciola gigantica. Grossly, liver showed a number of round nodules with clotted blood and necrosis. Fasciola parasites could be squeezed out of the opened lesions. Haemorrhagic ascites was a consistent feature. Glandular appearance of bile duct, marked periportal and pericellular fibrosis and necrosis along with the presence of parasites in the parenchyma were the salient histopathological findings.
