Estimating Leaf‐Area Growth in Pine
1971
Harms, William R.
Nondestructive estimates of the leaf—area growth (A) of a pine tree can be obtained from periodic measurements of the green length and the average fascicle length of the foliated portion (fascicle cluster) of individual branches. The prediction equation is A = b_0N + b_1 (Sum of N G_iL_i) where G_i is the green length, L_i is the average fascicle length for the ith fascicle cluster (i = 1,2,...,N), and N is the number of fascicle clusters on the tree. The coefficients for the equation are determined by the method of least squares from a representative sample of fascicle clusters of known leaf area and varying G and L.
