Letters question the validity of findings on the use of high fiber diets and the reduction of blood pressure and hypertension, suggesting that perhaps the reductions were due instead to lower salt intake and raised potassium levels produced by the high fiber diet. Measurement techniques and the low standard of error were also questioned. The salt intake was not considered to differ significantly from what the subjects would normally ingest, according to the researchers, and thus would not affect the results. The higher potassium levels found in the high fiber breads used in the experiment may have had an effect, but probably minimal. Standard of error was low because a number of readings were taken daily from standardized equipment and techniques at the same location each time.
