Present state of cultivation and research on mango in the Canary Islands
1989
Galan Sauco, V. | Fernandez Galvan, D. | Garcia Samarin, J.
Although the mango is still a minor crop in the Islands, there is considerable interest in its development as a commercial crop, mainly because of its relatively low water requirements and the excellent prospects of the Spanish Mainland market. Despite important climatic disadvantages, lucrative yields are possible through special cultural practices and planting in the warmest locations. The chief problems of this crop in the Archipelago are, embryo abortion, alternative bearing and incidence of soft-nose. Thus, the main research approaches are cultivar evaluation in connection with embryo-abortion and soft-nose, and techniques for controlling flowering.
