Diet and behavior
1987
A task force report summarizes recent research findings directed at improving the understanding of the effect of diet on human adult and child behavior. Specific attention is given to: aspects of nutrient metabolism in the brain affecting neurotransmission; brain neurochemistry; and the effects of dietary factors (carbohydrate/protein meals affecting brain serotonin/catecholamine synthesis; dietary tryptophan; vitamin/mineral deficiencies; and food additives) on behavior changes. It is concluded that dietary factors have subtle effects on human behavior, and that further studies are needed before any significance of dietary associations with central nervous system diseases or abnormal behavior can be established.(wz)
