Reduction of young child malnutrition and mortality in rural Jamaica
1978
Laverde, H.T. | D'Souza, Anthony J.
Extract: A systematic program to improve health and survival for the 6,651 preschool children of Hanover Parish, Jamaica began in 1973. Regular anthropometric surveillance ensured early identification of malnourished youngsters in whose homes intensive practical nutritional advice was thereafter provided. The program was first introduced into the Eastern and then the Western half of the parish. As a result, it was possible to observe, in a controlled fashion, sequential decline in the prevalence of malnutrition and mortality. Results confirm earlier experience in Jamaica and suggest that this centrally directed program relying on modest but appropriate technology and available manpower could serve as a model for substantial improvement of child health in rural areas of other later developing communities.
