Valsa canker fungus plays an important role in Euzophera pyriella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) growth and development

The pear pyralid moth, Euzophera pyriella Yang, has been associated with the Valsa canker (Valsa ceratosperma), which is responsible for the death of Xinjiang pear trees (Pyrus sinkiangensis). According to a field investigation and an indoor experiment, larval boring and fungal colonization always happen in the same phloem area. The larvae preferred to feed on diseased phloem colonized by V. ceratosperma, and even completed their entire life feeding only on the mycelium. Further, different strains had different effects on larval growth and development. The E. pyriella cohorts developed well on a high pathogenicity isolate but did not complete their lifecycle on a low pathogenicity isolate. V. ceratosperma plays an important role as a mediator in plant–herbivore interactions.
