The sustainable management of white grubs (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) pest of corn in "El Cielo" Biosphere Reserve, Tamaulipas, Mexico
1999
Villalobos, F.J.
An analysis was made of the problem caused by white grubs in cornfields at El Cielo Biosphere Reserve. Two species are mainly responsible for corn damage: Phyllophaga trichodes and P. misteca. The life cycle of both species is described. During an outbreak of P. trichodes, plant height reduction correlated positively with root damage and root damage white grub numbers. A list of ten natural enemies of white grubs is provided. Soil degradation may have promoted the white grub problem in the last 20 years. Addition of chicken manure to the soil may help cope with the white grub problem and increase soil fertility.
