Comparative and non-comparative morphological studies of the vertebrate reproductive system have given emphasis to the morphofunctional aspects of the gonads or other structures of the internal genitalia, especially in females. However, few studies discuss the morphological modifications and adaptations of male copulatory organs, whose main function is the transfer and direction of sperm through the female reproductive tract. Thus, the present review systematizes and compares morphological aspects of copulatory organs, with a special focus on vertebrates, as well as associates these structures from a phylogenetic perspective, and when possible highlights the main male reproductive strategies with a view to reproductive success. Keywords: reproduction, comparative morphology, copulation, sexual selection. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18561/2179-5746/biotaamazonia.v4n4p115-123
