Magnesium
1986
Dreosti, I.E.
A review paper supports the Australian dietary recommendation for magnesium. Magnesium occurs widely in nature and is found in most foods. Approximately 50 per cent of dietary magnesium is absorbed, mostly in the small intestine. This element is involved in many biochemical processes within the cells. Magnesium deficiency is rare, and large intakes of the mineral can be tolerated by humans and animals with normal renal function. A number of researchers have become extremely interested in the role of magnesium and the prevention of heart disease. Studies have shown magnesium deficiencies to be present in a variety of cardiovascular disorders. More research may provide additional information regarding this essential nutrient in the future.(lsp)
