Decline and revival of traditional food plants in East Africa
1985
Redhead, J.
A report discusses the characteristics of and changes in the family food supply and in the household diet in eastern Africa with respect to considerable reductions in the range of traditional domestic foodstuffs. Explanations for these changes are explored. Attention also is given to material and nutritional arguments in favor of the production and consumption of traditional plant foods and current constraints to their use. Consideration is given to governmental influences and regulations, women's time for crop growing, the impact of economic recession, the feasability and barriers to crop exports, and risks associated with revival of traditional foods.(wz)
