A perspective on alternative farm opportunities in the South
1990
Estes, E.A. | Ingram, D.L.
A number of researchers, extension specialists, and state department of agriculture personnel have initiated investigations of alternative enterprises in order to evaluate the economic growth potential they offer an area. To obtain a better perspective on the number and type of activities under investigation in various southern states, open-ended questionnaires were sent to 44 individuals in 14 Southern states. This article reports on some findings obtained from this survey. Approximately one-half of the 80 projects identified by respondents were directed toward horticultural crop commodity investigations while 19 of the total projects investigated aquacultural-related activities. Survey results indicate that horticultural crop alternatives will continue to be investigated and emphasized by personnel in southern land grant institutions over the next several years.
