Through a glass darkly: discerning the practical implications of human dietary protein energy interrelationships
1977
Scrimshaw, Nevin S.
An examination of protein and energy requirements in underprivileged populations and a look at the distribution of dietary intakes point to a biological need for considerably more dietary protein and calories than those populations in developing countries are receiving. The question raised is whether it is sufficient to concentrate on the production of conventional cereals, roots and tubers or whether more concentrated forms of vegetable protein need attention. Research needs are identified, and statistical tables are included.
