Diurnal variation in the starch content in Alphonso mango shoots at different stages of fruit bud differentiation

The buds of Alphonso mango which were expected to differentiate into flower buds, those which were not expected to differentiate but produce vegetative growth in March (scar buds) and those which would not differentiate (undifferentiated buds) were analyzed diurnally for starch content during different stages of fruit bud differentiation (FBD). Starch content of different buds was significantly low at 8 and 20 hours of the day during all the stages of FBD. Higher content of starch was recorded in the scar buds when compared to normal buds. A sudden increase in starch content was noticed in these scar buds at post-FBD which declined in the subsequent stages. The results indicate that starch does not serve as a ready source of energy for FBD in mango buds.
