Growth of Escherichia coli and concentration of iron in an infant feeding formula
1978
Baltimore, Robert S. | Vecchitto, John S. | Pearson, Howard A.
The growth rates of Escherichia coli in fresh human and bovine milk compared with a cow's milk formula and the effects of iron supplementation on the growth rate in infant feeding formulas are reported. Previous studies indicated that iron supplementation of cow's milk formulas may predispose infants consuming them to increased risk of bacterial infection. These studies demonstrate that E. coli grows at a maximal rate in a widely used commercial cow's milk formula regardless of its iron content. Also, no biologic inhibitory activity was observed in these formulas compared to fresh human or bovine milk.
