The status of vegetable protein in the United Kingdom is enveloped in confusion and conflict. The Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) issued a recommendation that additional research should be conducted to assess the nutritional and long-term effects of including vegetable protein in the diet. This view is contested by a vegetable protein manufacturer who impugnes the qualifications of the committee on whose report the DHSS based its recommendations.
