Influence of sodium phytate and gut microflora on the solubility of Ca, Mg and Zn in the rat digestive tract

The solubility of P, Ca, Mg and Zn in the digestive tract of germfree and conventionalized rats fed a diet with or without sodium phytate was investigated. After the gut contents were centrifuged at 10,700 X g for 30 min, minerals in the soluble and insoluble fractions were analyzed, and the ratio of insoluble minerals was calculated as the insoluble mineral content per total (= soluble + insoluble) mineral content. The ratios of insoluble minerals in total contents of the digestive tract were higher for the phytate-containing diet. In five segments of the digestive tract, the ratios of insoluble P and Mg were higher for the phytate-containing diet except for Mg in the cecum. The ratio of insoluble Ca showed no increase in the stomach and the small intestine, but increased in the cecum and the colo-rectum with the phytate-containing diet. Compared with rats fed the phytate-free diet, those fed the phytate-containing diet had a much higher ratio of insoluble Zn in the digestive tract and lower Zn content in bonbe. The effects of gut microflora on the insoluble ratios of minerals were generally more pronounced in the cecum and the colo-rectum than in the stomach and small intestine.
