Content analysis: An approach to evaluating nutritional care
1981
Jackson, M. Yvonne
Content analysis techniques, developed from communications research, assessed the effectiveness of an instructional unit designed to teach students how to individualize nutritional care, accounting for patients' sociocultural backgrounds in diet modifications. Key words were identified for each of 7 content unit categories: cultural, economic, physical, psychological, religious, social, and miscellaneous. Nutritional care plans developed by 14 senior level dietetic students for adult onset, non-insulin dependent diabetics were analyzed on the basis of these content unit categories, before and after completion of the instructional unit. Prior to instruction, about 50% of students used only physical factors in describing patients' needs; these plans were not individualized as they failed to consider sociocultural characteristics of the patient. After instruction, however, all but 1 student considered both sociocultural and physical needs of the patient in prescribing dietetic actions to meet those needs.
