A simplified P-M model for improving irrigation management of strawberries in a semi-closed hydroponic system

In strawberry soilless culture, an accurate and dynamic control of water supply is needed to meet plant water requirements, due to the limited volume of the root environment. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to improve the irrigation control on strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. ‘Festival’) in a semi-closed hydroponic system. A transpiration model was proposed to estimate water uptake based on climate parameters and leaf area development. Plant transpiration, measured by a weighing lysimeter, solar radiation and water vapor pressure deficit (VPD) inside the greenhouse were recorded throughout the crop cycle. A good short-term (10 min) prediction of the plant water uptake was obtained by adjusting the coefficients of the model in two stages differentiated in time (before and after 90 days after transplanting). An estimation of the leaf area index (LAI) as a function of Days After Transplanting (DAT) was also obtained. This study shows the possible implementation of these models in the irrigation control systems to synchronize water supply and plant requirements to improve irrigation management.
