In the years 2012 to 2016 the lower 10 km of the Traisen River were re-vitalized and reconstructed in the frame of a LIFE+ project. The old channelized river, fragmented by several sills, was maintained as backwater and flood drainage while a new, near-natural channel through the floodplain was created. Monitoring of the fish biocenosis is carried out annually using several methods and shows a fast colonization by a large diversity of species in high abundances. While the old channel did not provide suitable spawning- and rearing habitats, a high density of juvenile fish of various species can be encountered in the new channel. Completely re-opening the continuum to the Danube has directly led to an increase and reproduction of typical Danubian species.
