The morpho-physiologic analysis of biodiversity of melon germplasm cultivated in Romania

This paper presents a study of the physiology and biochemistry of Cucumis melo species, in particular the varieties: cantalupensis, reticulatus and inodorus. The study focused on the physiological processes that occur in fruits during their growth and development, which included the following characteristics: respiratory intensity, content of endogen ethylene, flesh conductibility, total dry content and water content; content in soluble glugides and titratable acidity, content in β-carotene, content in ascorbic acid. These parameters were analyzed because of their importance in melon quality, transport resistance and storage. Respiration intensity, ethylene synthesis and electrical conductivity of flesh tissue seem to have a strong influence in maintaining good quality for a long period of time. Fruit quality and consumer acceptability in melon are strongly related to the concentration of soluble solids content and titratable acidity in the ripened fruits. The size and the quality of mature melons are also determined by the accumulation of water and total dry matter. Flesh color is another important feature to take into account when assessing fruit quality. This research allowed recommendations to be made regarding the behavior of studied genotypes in Romanian culture conditions.
