Sharecropping in the cotton south: a case of uneven development in agriculture
1984
Mann, S.A.
Extract: The purpose of this article is, first, to examine how Marx's theory contributes to an understanding of uneven rural development and, second, to use a historical case study of uneven capitalist development in cotton production in the American South during the period from 1870-1930 to inform the theory and to provide a better understanding of some of the obstacles to the capitalist development of agriculture. Through a comparative, regional analysis, some of the social, historical, and technical factors that accounted for this uneven development are examined.
